Putting Students First. Delivering Real Results.

Meet Danielle

I’m Danielle Gonzales, a proud product of Albuquerque Public Schools, a Valley High School graduate, and the daughter of this vibrant community. I’m also a wife, a mother of three, and guardian to a fourth. Albuquerque is my hometown, and like so many families here, I want better opportunities for our kids than we had for ourselves.

I’ve spent my entire career fighting for educational equity — from the classroom to the Capitol. After graduating from George Washington University with degrees in Political Science and Spanish, I earned my Master’s in Education from the University of Notre Dame and began my career as a 4th grade teacher. I’ve since worked across the country on education policy, bringing expertise and a national network back home to APS.

When I first joined the APS Board, the district lacked clear goals and accountability. I helped change that. I led the Board in adopting a student-outcomes-focused governance model, hired a superintendent who shares our vision, and helped craft a strategic plan grounded in equity and excellence. I championed a focus on historically underserved student groups — English learners, Native students, Black students, and students from low-income families — to ensure every child has access to grade-level instruction and the support they need to thrive.

We’ve made real progress — from raising graduation rates to increasing access to mental health services — but there is still work to do. I’m running for re-election to stay the course, keep students at the center, and ensure APS becomes the district our children deserve.

  • Progress is possible. But only if we persist. I’d be honored to have your support.

What I’ve Accomplished

Raising the Bar for All Students
As your APS Board Member, I led the adoption of a bold strategic plan focused squarely on student outcomes. Under this vision, graduation rates are rising, more students are reading and doing math at grade level, and we’ve put historically underserved students at the center of our work. From supporting high-quality instructional materials to championing strong school leadership, we’re creating real change in our classrooms.

Prioritizing Student Well-being
Students can’t thrive academically if they don’t feel safe or supported. That’s why I’ve fought for increased funding for mental health services, championed restorative justice practices, and supported higher pay for school counselors. I’ve also helped expand professional development so our educators are equipped to support the whole child — emotionally, socially, and academically.

Building a Transparent, Accountable Board
When I joined the board, APS lacked clear goals and direction. Today, we have a strategic plan with measurable outcomes, and we’re holding ourselves accountable to achieving them. I’ve helped build a culture of transparency — one where community voice matters, data drives decisions, and student outcomes stay at the center of every conversation.

The Work Ahead

Academic Excellence for Every Student
We’ve made meaningful gains, but there’s more to do. I’m committed to continuing the work of improving math and reading outcomes, especially in schools that need the most support. I’ll keep pushing for strong instruction, high expectations, and resources that help every student meet their potential.

A Stronger Sense of Belonging
I’ll deepen our focus on student well-being by expanding access to mental health supports, continuing restorative practices, and ensuring every student — no matter their background — feels seen, heard, and safe at school. I’ll also work to elevate student voice and ensure our policies reflect their lived experiences.

Keeping APS Focused on Results
We finally have a roadmap for progress. I’ll ensure the board stays committed to it — holding the superintendent accountable, using student data to drive our actions, and being transparent with the community about our progress. With your support, we can stay the course and make APS the district our kids deserve.
